Always save a separate copy of the original file.

To cut out a section of a Wave file, first select it.

Edit->Cut or Control-X will remove the selection from the display and place it on the clipboard, where it is available to be pasted.

The Delete key clears the selection completely. Once this is done, and the file has been saved or another operation performed, the deleted segment cannot be restored.
